HISTORY OF SHRI GURU NANAK DEV JI GURUDWARA NAGIANA SAHIB JI. This is a historical site associated with Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Gurudwara Nagiana Sahib Ji is located in Odoke, near Batala, some 35 kilometers from Amritsar. Sant Baba Chuggat Singh Ji erected the Gurudwara’s main edifice. It used to be a tiny building, but in 1960 it was rebuilt and extended into a massive structure.
The tale of the “Sheshnag” snake that sheltered young Nanak as he slept in the sun is probably familiar to most of us.
According to legend, the same Cobra that imparted shade accompanied Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his Udasians (travels or pilgrimages undertaken by Guru Nanak to propagate God’s name).
Guru Nanak Dev Ji stopped at the hamlet of Udoke on his travels and remained there for 9 months and 26 days on his route to his in-laws in the city of Batala. The devoted cobra was still following him; by this time, the cobra had grown up and was very elderly.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji asked him to stop following him and instead relax and live in Nagiana for the remainder of his life. Guru Nanak Dev Ji bestowed his blessings on the shrine, promising that anybody who visits with pure faith would have their desires granted. Some people think of Nagiana Sahib as a site where snakes are worshipped. This is their erroneous foresight. It’s a Gurudwara, after all, and Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji takes priority.
ADMINISTRATION
Baba Chuggat Singh Prabandhak Committee, a non-profit organization, is in charge of the Gurudwara’s management.
INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION
Apart from the Gurudwara, the trust also manages an educational institute/higher secondary school close to it.
The gurudwara committee not only provides religious education to pupils but also contemporary education so that they may compete at any level of modern city life.
DISPENSARY FOR CHARITY
Since 2009, the Gurudwara has also managed a charity dispensary for the village’s underprivileged and needy residents. The trustees of the Gurudwara want to turn this dispensary into a full-fledged hospital with all of the latest amenities. The trustees of the gurudwara are also considering making several of the treatments free of charge.
